London Fog Tea Latte

This is such an interesting drink and I am not sure if I like the name or taste more. I have walked through the foggy streets of London, which are more dreary and chilly than romantic but the English are not really famous for their weather now are they? But when it comes to brewing a good cuppa they sure rank among the top. London Fog Tea is also known as Earl Grey Latte or Vanilla Tea Misto. Earl Grey is usually a black tea flavored with bergamot, which is a fragrant citrus fruit like a lime.

London Fog Latte is the perfect drink to brew on those cold, damp and blah days when you need comfort or are thinking of nestling up with a book or Netflix under a blanket. I have been wanting to make it for a long time after I tasted it at Starbucks but did not want to buy a milk steamer or a frother (don’t we all have all those gadgets we have bought impulsively thinking oh so cute and yes I will make flower shaped sandwiches with this bread cutter…).

When I found a hack online to make frothy milk with a French press (a coffee maker that I had bought and used a few times) I decided to make a London Fog Latte. Since we drink a lot of herbal teas, I luckily had a few Earl Grey tea bags too and one chilly day in December 2020, it all came together.

Step by Step

  1. Gather your ingredients.
  2. Measure 1.5 cups water and set it to boil in a pan.
  3. Add 1/4 c milk, 2 tsp sugar, 2 tsp vanilla essence, and 2 Earl Grey tea bags.
  4. Let it come to a gentle boil.
  5. In the meantime:
  6. Warm up 1/2 cup milk in the microwave and pour it in the French press.
  7. Start pumping the press and allow the milk to froth.
  8. When the water comes to a boil, remove the tea bags and pour the tea into 2 cups till only 2/3 full because you need room for the froth.
  9. Spoon the milk froth on top of the tea; you might have to pump a few more times to make more froth.
  10. Sprinkle the froth with cinnamon sugar and serve.

Some Tips

You can brew the tea in individual cups instead of in a pan. I love my tea piping hot and so I always use a pan. Place an Earl Grey tea bag in a cup and pour hot water in it. Allow it to steep for 2 mins. Remove the tea bag and add the vanilla, sweetener and top with milk froth.

You can use any type of milk if you want to make it vegan-soy, oat or almond and you can also choose your sweetener-honey, agave or sugar or skip it completely if you do not want any.

I have never used a milk steamer or frother but if you have one of those you will not need the French press.
